Zodiac Killer

 

An unnamed serial murderer who operated in Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s was known by the moniker "The Zodiac Killer." The murderer is infamous for his string of killings and his insulting letters to media outlets and law enforcement. One of the most notorious unsolved cases in American criminal history, the Zodiac Killer's identity is still a mystery.

Victims: Between 1968 and 1969, the Zodiac Killer is thought to have killed at least five people. Typically, the victims were young couples who were parked in outlying regions.

Cyphers and Letters: The murderer sent newspapers a string of cryptic letters in which he admitted to the killings and included cyphers, or coded communications. While some of these cyphers have been cracked, others are still a mystery.

Threatening: The murderer frequently made fun of the public and law enforcement by using the moniker "Zodiac" and using threats in his letters. He insisted that media publish his letters.

Law enforcement conducted significant investigations, but the Zodiac Killer was never located or captured. He spoke to the press and the police, but his real identity is still unknown.

Other Potential Victims: Although just five killings have been proven to be the work of the Zodiac Killer, he claimed to have killed as many as 37 people. Some sleuths think he might be accountable for additional unresolved crimes.

The Zodiac Killer has had a lasting impression on popular culture, spawning a number of books, films, and television programmes. Numerous theories and suppositions about the identity of the murderer have also been generated by the case.

Law enforcement continually reexamines evidence and public tips in an effort to find the Zodiac Killer. The case is one of the longest-running mysteries in American criminal history because, despite these continued efforts, the killer's true identity and whereabouts are still unknown.
